Are you talking about a connection using something like minicom or seyon, or
a ppp connection? I'll guess you mean ppp, and these ideas are based on that
guess.
1. Do you mean modem handshaking? Does the "screeching" stop some time
before the hangup or not? If not, the problem is at the modem-to-modem level
of the connection, and I doubt a Linux list will be of much help. Check your
modem settings (connect to the modem with minicom and enter the apropriate
command, probably AT&V) and see if there is something wrong at that level.
2. Or do you mean pppd handshaking? To see what problems you're running into
here, the place to look is your logs. See what messages pppd and chat (or
whatever dialer you are using) write to the logs (/var/log/messages and
perhaps /var/log/debug, on a stock system). Compare them to the logs of s
successful connection made with one of the other modems you mention. If they
don't tell you what's going on, include them (for one unsuccessful and one
successful attempt), along with your ppp options file and the line you use
to invoke pppd, in a follow up posting. They might tell someone here what
your problem is.
