Well, I don't know what I did, but I'm guessing that some how I overwrote the 
original boot data with bad boot data.... I'm chalking this one up to 
experience

Anyway, I bit the bullet & reformatted, reinstalled win98, etc.. everything 
worked out fine -  the only tweak I had to make was to set the Active 
partition back to hda2.
