After two days of playing around, and with some helpful hints from
Lawson Whitney, I was finally able to get my PPP connection up and
running.

<insert loud applause here>

It turns out that the information in the HOWTO and what I had in front
of me was just enough different that it was confusing. But, happily, I
got it. Thanks Lawson.

Now on to the next problem. Since I have a very minimal system running
on a tiny hard drive, there is no room to even consider X, so I am
running just command line. Which is fine, I think, I get to understand
the commands better. Because of this I am using PINE for e-mail and
newsgroups. Here is the system info:

Slackware 3.1.0
Linux kernel 2.0.27
PPP 2.2.0
PINE 3.95

I can send mail. I can read and send to newsgroups. But I can't get my
mail. The incoming mail server is POP3. I tried setting the inbox-path
to {pop.froggernet.com}INBOX. But this gives me an error that reads IMAP
server disconnection. I talked to the people at my ISP and understand
now that this is the problem, because the mail server is POP and PINE is
trying to go through IMAP.

Obvious question is, can I get there from here? Is there a way of
setting up PINE to get the mail from the POP3 server rather than trying
to go through IMAP?

Also, is there a PINE newsgroup and/or mail list?

Thanks,

Dave
