Definitely TCP/IP to start with (once it's running, consider Appletalk if
you want to do file &/or print sharing). If the cable is okay, and both NICs
are the same speed (10 mbps or 100 mbps) this should be no different than
setting up a LAN connection through a hub.

On the Linux side, set up the eth0 interface through "ifconfig", and use
"route" to create a route using eth0 to the Mac's IP address.

On the Mac side ... well, there I'm pretty rusty, but basically you want to
use its TCP program ("Mac Transport"? I forget) to set up its Ethernet
interface, assign an IP address, and create a route to the Linux host.

Beyond that ... you'll have to tell us what you tried and failed doing,
remembering that expertise here is primarily in Linux, not Mac OS.
