Just my 2c,
Take care that some ISP use a modified CHAP protocol (MSCHAP which stands
for Micro$oft CHAP)
anyway MSCHAP is also usable with linux PPP.
Did you read the PPP-HOWTO (should be in /usr/doc/HOWTO) ?
