Because a WinModem uses the CPU to emulate missing hardware
via special "drivers."

Generally, if it's PCI, it's a WinModem and not much better
than a paperweight. Although there's ONE manufacturer
making Non-HSP/WinModem modems, 99.998% of the PCI modems
out there are WinModems.

No. Not at this point. Unless you want to have a separate
PC for running Windows JUST so you can run a WinModem and
do all your internet, etc via SAMBA (NT networking on
Linux., essentially.) I won't say it will NEVER happen,
just that it's been said that all the Linux coders have
essentially that it'll be a cold day in hell before they
write drivers for HSP/Winmodems.
