help with mail filtering and .forward

I have hear that a .forward file can contain an binary executable that can
perform any number of things to an incomming e-mail.  While a search on
this brings up some windows applications, I am havving a hard time finding
anything relating to a unix environment.  Does anybody have any info on
.forward mail filtering?
