What exactly do you mean by "printer isn't detected"? Under Linux, printers are
never detected, only parallel ports. Since you've already got a parallel port
set up (lp0), that's as far as it goes.
Certain of the newer printers have two way communications. Unfortunately, the
software that comes with the printer to facilitate this are invariably
Windows-only. However, you do not really need two way communication with
printers. For example, if your printer panel or LED's lets you know that it's
out of paper, then you don't need a popup window telling you exactly the same
thing.
What you should do, if you haven't done it already, is to try printing anyway.
If you have printtool setup correctly and printer on, you should get an output.
Try the test prints in the printtool. If you get a printout, then the printer
is "detected". If the output is garbage, then the printtool is not set up
correctly.
