didn't catch the beginning of the thread.
when just LI comes sometimes means that you rebuilt the kernel but didn't
reinstall lilo after the rebuilt.
like "make bzlilo"
Also another problem can be that you may the cmos virus checker on and it
can find lilo as a virus in the mbr sector.
