To a degree, this thread is pointless. If whatsisname wants to give a
succinct but possibly rude answer, then that's his business. If you want to
give a friendlier one, then that's yours. Presumably the newbie will go on
the response best suited.
OTOH, if the linux community wants to advocate linux use, then frightening
people off is possibly not the way to go about it. If a person does not
understand that a reply of theirs might be construed as "unfriendly", then I
suppose that this is a problem.
If a question makes you impatient with the person asking it, perhaps it's
best not to answer it. If you can't say something nice ...
