Well .. this isn't a place for a economics treatise ... so I'll limit my
reply to reminding you that there are cheaper sources for the portions of
Linux (the kernel, all the GNU stuff ... really, the entire core of Linux as
an OS) that are covered by the GPL and similar "free" licensing. Try
www.cheapbytes.com for CDs of all the big names in the $2/CD range. There
are other on-line sites that sell cheapie CDs too.

And just to make you envious ... at August's Linuxworld (San Jose, CA), I
was able to pick up free CDs of RH6.0, SuSE6.2, Storm (a newer
Debian-derived distro), Caldera OpenLinux 2.2, TurboLinux Cluster ... even a
copy of the i86 version of Solaris 7.
