That didn't help nor did delay = 1.

Strange.

Do I need LILO at all since I have nothing else on this disk but Linux?

When I installed LILO I told the setup program to install it on the
superblock of my Linux partition. The linux partition is also set at the
bootable one using Linux fdisk.
