Could you be a bit more specific about which "basic programs" you are having
trouble with, and how they show their slowness? If they are network related,
delays on the order of 2 minutes may be configuration errors associated with
DNS settings, and they can be easily fixed.

If you have 192 megs of real, physical RAM, swap problems shouldn't be
arising in the course of normal use. Also, swap under Linux isn't (normally)
done to a file; it's done to a dedicated partition on the drive (Linux won't
use your W98 swap file, for example). You might check with "free" to see if
Linux is finding the swap space and if it is using it. (This will also
verify that Linux sees and uses all 192 megs of your RAM -- Caldera 2.2
should be new enough that the 64-meg bug is corrected on it, but I don't
know that first hand. If it isn't, repost and someone can tell you how to
fix it.)

These suggestions (and the ones I saw Kenneth Stephens post) should serve
for starters. Generally speaking, questions that describe problems more
specifically than you have elicit more helpful answers. For general
questions, the Linux-Newbie FAQ (http://www.linux-learn.org/faqs/) is a
handy resource, as are, of course, the LDP resources (http://www.linuxdoc.org/).
