It really depends on how your Linux is set up.  My 486 takes
only 20 seconds to boot Linux.

Are you sure you have enough RAM?  Linux is indeed very slow
if it has to keep swapping memory.

I doubt it.  Corel, RedHat, Caldera and Madrake are designed
for ease-of-use, not speed.  If you want a speedy system, you
have to strip out the Linux-for-Dummies bloat.

Yeah, you can speed things up by removing depmod.  Ditto ldconfig.  
Of course, you will then have to do these manually if you make any 
changes to your system that affect modules or libraries.
