The "gcc packets"? Do you mean packages? Please explain ...

        a - what you mean, if I'm misinterpreting "packets"

        b - how you are doing the install - dselect, apt-get, dpkg, 
                or some other way - from CD, from a local mirror, or
                over the net.

        c - what "it doesn't work" means.

Also, what version of gcc are you installing? I don't think my slink is r3,
and I don't know offhand how they are handling the 2.7.x versus 2.9.x
decision in r2.
