If I follow you correctly, you have the following situation:
1. On the LAN, all machines can ping each other.
2. Off the LAN, the router (what you call the Gateway) can
successfully ping by either IP address or hostname.
3. Other hosts on the LAN CAN ping through the router by
IP address, but CANNOT ping by hostname.domainname .
If I have this right, your problem is definitely with DNS. The easiest way
to fix it (there are many solutions) is to set up the router as a
forwarding-only DNS server. Assuming Slackware 3.5 uses an up-to-date
version of BIND (and if it doesn't, you should update it, since BIND is
known to have security problems - Slackware in general is up to version 7.0,
having jumped there from last summer's 4.0), all you need to do is add to
named.conf the IP addresses of the nameservers you want to use, in a
"forwarders" block (look in the file; there's probably a model there,
commented out - I don't have one at hand this morning to check).
If I have misinterpreted what you wrote -- in particular, if the Win95 hosts
cannot ping through the router by IP address -- then this suggestion is
wrong. Sorry. In that case, I don't understand what you were saying in the
last paragraph quoted below.
