Speaking of problems...

I just changed out a FIC VA-503+ for an ABit BP6, bringing all my
hardware and drives along, etc.

In the FIC motherboard I had tried running a (PCI) Netgear FA-310TX ethernet
adapter but it wouldn't stay running. So, I punted back to an old
(16-bit ISA) SMC 8013EWC I had, and the net ran fine.

With the BP6, once I configured out the Legacy IRQs from the BIOS PnP/PCI
configuration it all ran fine. EXCEPT that the network adapter (the SMC)
would die after a minute or two, silently stop sending/receiving, with the
eth0 driver complaining about an unexpected code on a 'following frame'
a few times before the card stopped talking. I adjusted the BIOS values
for 16-bit ISA bus tweaks, but there was no help for it.

So, I swapped out the SMC for the Netgear, changed the /etc/conf.modules
file to reflect the new hardware, and voila! Everything works great.

WEIRD. Motherboards and option cards and compatibilities. Sheesh.
At least Linux gives some error diagnostics that help identify the
existence and source of the problems, unlike some other operating systems
which simply crash, or might just say "bad technician. go sit in the
corner and stare at the safe mode screen."
