There is a program called aumix that you can find at
http://www.freshmeat.net
It can run in curse mode and also command line mode.  It can also save the
values.  What I did was went into curse mode and adjusted the volume to my
taste.  I saved the volume into a file.  At start up I put a small shell
script to run the command line version and told it to load the save volume
levels, I did this in my rc files, right after the sound card loaded.

There is probably better ways of doing it, but this will work.
