I presume you have not been reading the mail latly, as this subject has
been addressed several times up and tilll and including today.

Providing you are using the proper Xserver for your video card check with;
ls -al /etc/X11/X

SuperProbe should tell you what the video card is, check out
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards and make sure the correct server is being used.

If all that is correct, check /etc/X11/XF86Config under
# The svga server
      Section "Screen"
that there are lines like:
# The svga server
Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    Device "MGA 2164W [Millennium II]"
    Monitor "ADI13104"

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection

The above is for a Matrox Millennium II video card and uses XF86_SVGA
server.

If you configured X properly at install time then all that schould be ok,
its then just a question of using the key combination ctrl-alt and the
numeric-pads + and - keys to change resolutions.

If you had been reading the mail then you will now say, o i've seen a mail
like this "yesterday".
