Screen Resolution

I upgraded from Slackware 3.6 to 7.0 and I am not able to get a sreen
resolution above 8 bpp.  I even attempted to use the same XF86Config
file I had prior to the upgrade.   At the command line I use the line
"startx --bpp 16" and I still default to 8bpp.  I am using a Trident
9860 video card.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
