I think the XF86Config from slackware 3.6 is insufficent for slackware 7.0
a lot has changed, altho' it will allow X to start.

Providing that you are using the proper server, i cant find your card named
under Trident in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards i presume it uses the SVGA server.
Then i would run 'xf86config' and recreate a XF86Config file, save the old
one first.

The other thing is that you have missed a "-" in;

startx --bpp 16 It should be;

startx -- -bpp 16
