Hello
I am a blind PC user trying to figure out the easiest way to set up a
linux box with text-to-speech capabilities. I have a PC running windows 95
(can you sense why I am desperate??) with a very good but very expensive
screen reader. I've tried to find someone I can ask questions about
setting up a linux box, but everyone I know seems to be either a MAC or
gaming geek, grin. Books on linux and hardware do not seem to be plentiful
through the libraries for the blind. I've read some documents on hwo to
set up a linux box but they were very vague when it came to the speech
part. So here is my small grasp of the coices:
1. Festival
This is an okay idea but I would rather not have to vuy another soundcard,
plus I am not sure how much speech I will get, I would rather have a
system where the screen reader boots up along with the OS so I can hear
system messages, if i am getting the jargon right here
2. EMACS Speak
Much like the Festival idea, another soundcard and not sure how much
speech I will get back
3. Using my present PC with the screen reader (text-to-speech software)
already installed and familiar and somehow hooking it up to the linux box
I am most vague on how this works, tho I suspect it would be like when I
use my PC to dial into the UNIX shell account i have on my ISP. This is my
preferred option since I get to use the reader I am familiar with and it
would be less hardware and software to be installed on the linux box.
Hopefully I didn't mangle this explanation and question too badly.
Can anyone give me ideas how this linux box with speech can be
accomplished?
Thank.
Yours,
kestrell
