Dam you got a heavey system. xmms shouldn't be eating up to much resouces..
Try downsampleing it (lower quaility), see if that helps any..
also you might want to try mpg123, it is pretty quick.
Maybe xmms isn't the program that is bogging down the system, it could be just
the "straw that broke the camels back". Do you use this as a
server/workstation? Try using the `top` command use 'P' to show what is eating
cpu, and use 'M' to show what is eating memory...
Also you might want to goto xmms home page and see if there is anything in the
FAQ about it.
