xmms is not a memory hog, i have it running here at this very moment, here
is what "top" says about it.
PRI  NI  SIZE  RSS SHARE STAT  LIB %CPU %MEM   TIME COMMAND
  11   0   916  184       100       R    0      6.9        0.2    2:25     maudio

After 10 minutes of watching %MEM did get to 8.2.

I suggest you use top to find the "real memory" hog or configure xmms
properly.
