Hi everybody !!

> I didn't mean to snap at you, Fernando

Sure...did I sound like I feel mistreated???

:-)

I am sorry, ...absolutely not. But let us stop apologizing.

I am in the list since December 12

The same day I installed Linux in two of my three machines at the university (the third one is used for Video edition...and is that one that I would like to see "Microsoft free" some day).

I would preferred to have it installed at home...but my disk is full.

Then I bought a WINLINUX 2000 distribution and have just installed it in my mother's computer (yes, at her age, she wanted to try it).(by the way this installation appears to be clean and easy for new users..I think is a good choice for people who want to take a peep on Linux)

Before doing this I read a book about Red Hat Linux that costed me around 80 U$ ( the shipping was more expensive than the book)... (in Argentina nobody pays software licenses...I never payed for software in my life)

I mentioned all this just to say:

1)
Yes, I want to have control over the machine and don't want the opposite.

2)
Yes, I am tired of microsoft Windows because is a bad system..and I am tired of Bill Gates wich seems to me a very stupid person.

..but I hate the capitalism more than I hate Mr. Gates. He is just an expression of a ridiculous system.
The 800 millions of hungry people are another expression...

I wouldn't like to be a fanatic that hate BG and then is joining another religion. I don't think Linux users want that.

3)
Yes. I like to study , and I like to feel that my effort is worthwhile, and I get a problem solved.
But I like to say to my pupils: "this is not easy...you will have to sweat to learn this...." I warn them that the things that are easy are already done.

Nothing worst than the lie that you can "learn having fun at the same time"...or "with .&#@..everything is easy".

3b)
Before I start with Linux I read "Linux is for everybody".
And in RedHat 6.0: "install using the WORKSTATION option (recommended for new users)"

....the installation TESTS the x system and finally says "you can read this?"...and then " would you like X to start at boot??" YESSSSSS !!!!! SAYS THE NEWBIE.

And the system stars once, twice......ten times without any problems...and unexpectedly PUFFFF

4)
I really would like to be warned about this...specially when I thought I was performing the safest and minimal installation.

when someone says that
" I agree with you here about re-installing for the experience. I've done it about 20 times this week, my first week with Linux.."

I think is a nice challenge when you are warned about the work you will have to do.
Another member of the list says that he payed someone ....

The people at my office that watched me going home at midnight think that Linux is for crazy people like me...not for them.

5)
> And I think RedHat should maybe have
> tested the install program for this release a little better than they
> did.

If the system crashes the way my system crashed I think we should be as severe as we are with Microsoft.

I would say that RH SHOULD HAVE TESTED the install program A LOT better.

As a newbie...I want to be very exigent with Linux... (or should I say with Linux distributors??)
I won't accept the same things I hate of M$

6)
> Don't be afraid to make mistakes, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
> Words can't really hurt you.

OK :-)

Now I think I look ANGRY with the simplification of the difficulties. That is how I feel.

And is not with any of you, people of the list.. Please!!!!!
I really appreciate your time and your help !!
(and of course that I will continue to bother you with my newbie questions) :-)

Like John says:
My answers have come from this list. Thanks guys.

I didn't mentioned that:

a) I found that documentation available on Internet is often out of date... as a fact, not knowing exactly if it is updated or not makes me feel insecure.....

b) More difficult is to find documentation in spanish (my language)...so I have to PRINT everything and then study..translating ....to find that "this little point" wasn't in the manuals.... :-(

c) The same day (December 12) i subscribed to linux-espaol a spanish discussion list. Untill now zero messages.

So, thanks again to this list. I feel Linux IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY .... but it will be for me ... I hope some day I can say, as lawson: "this is a M$ free environment".

By the way, (this is to Richard who asked about my dutch last name) I am descendant of Marinus Korstanje, who emigrated to Argentina around 1890 from Zeeland, The Netherlands. Shortly there (thanks to internet) will be a book(let) published with known ascendants and descendants of the Korstanje-clan. :-)

Have a nice week end !!! :-)
