Well, you turned it on, or a least it seems that way, judging from the way
you speak, at install time, (at least thsesedays with redhat and a few
other distro's) you are asked if you want to boot into GUI mode, now if you
did that, then edit /etc/inittab and alter the line that says;

id:5:initdefault: 
to
id:3:initdefault:

A small note here, if one uses slackware then GUI mode is init 4 Redhat
amunst others define init 5 as GUI.

In ALL cases init 3 is normal console mode.
The last line in /etc/inittab can be left alone safely, IF the above is
changed.
