Ok Lawson. Finally got this thing working again. I had to go into expert
mode (I'm better with expert than I am beginner..... and I am a total
newbie here, but then again I hated windows because they do it all for
you).

Anyway.

Here's the script.... gotta retype it on my iMac......

-----------------------

1) I made a copy of the ppp-on script, editted with my info, and placed
it in /etc/ppp/

The standard info (from /etc/ppp/ppp-on):

TELEPHONE=555-1212
ACCOUNT=mylogin
PASSWORD=DUH!!!
LOCAL_IP=207.138.xxx.xxx
REMOTE_IP=0.0.0.0

then also in the file are these lines:

exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug lock modem crtscts /dev/ttyS0 38400 \
    asyncmap 20A0000 escape FF kdebug 0 $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \
    noipdefault netmask $NETMASK defaultroute connect $DIALER_SCRIPT

2) then chmod'd it.
3) then typed /etc/ppp/ppp-on

bash: /etc/ppp/ppp-on: 207.138.xxx.xxx: command not found

so I changed my static IP to 0.0.0.0 and ran ppp-on again

bash: /etc/ppp/ppp-on: 0.0.0.0: command not found

so I deleted both the Remote and Local IP lines.

returned:

/usr/sin/pppd: invalid netmask value 'defaultroute'

so I deleted "netmask $NETMASK defaultroute" from usr/ppp/ppp-on

Ran it again and nothing happened. As far as I know it could still be
looking for the modem right now.

----------------------------

So that's it. I didn't know how to change the values so I tried
deleteing them.

Do you see anything, other than deleting values, that could be wrong? Or
is that a stupid question?

John
