I see a lot being said about cat5 patch cables.

Based on my experience there's only one thing to say:

  BUY them, don't make them

The list of problems caused by faulty patch cables (some of which may
initially test as ok - unless you have very $$$ testing equipment) is
long. Due to crosstalk computers may hang, switches may hang.

When it comes to paying $5 for a cable, the relative price compared to the
computer it's connecting is < 0.5% usually. 

For 10baseT, ok. You can get away with a hand-held crimper. For 100baseT,
you'll find that good people can go to hell.
