I too  stand to be corrected, I think a "hop" is a network device linking
two networks (or a network and a node, eg. a computer).  So a hop could be
a "hub", "switch", etc. Usually you need at least 1 "hop" to connect two
computers together, but you can also use a crossover CAT5 cable.
