Hi Simon,
Well, I assume from the RPM reference that you are running RedHat. If so, do
ls -l /etc/X11/X
and tell us what it reports. Also, do a
ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86*
and tell us what is reported.
It sounds like in your case /etc/X11/X is linked to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_VGA16 or some such.
