Where do you "see" that? I just checked the Cardlist at the XFree86 site
(http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html - is this the "card index" you are
referring to below?), and it lists the "S3 Trio3D" as still using
"XF86_VGA16" server. Might you need to get a non-standard X server (one that
is not part of the standard XFree86 package) to do this?

If my guess above (non-standard X server) is correct, the stock RH SVGA.rpm
won't be what you need. Check wherever you saw the information you refer to
at the start of your message to see where you might find the appropriate
version.

What do you mean by "set everything up"? One of the options in xf86config is
to select your X server and make the needed symlink to /somethingorother/X .
Did you do that step, choosing the SVGA server?

I don't see and S3V server listed anywhere in the Cardlist, so I assume my
memory that it is deprecated, and not available as part of the current X
distribution, is correct.

Always a possibility ... but I don't know what it might be, if you did the
xf86config run correctly.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand this one. What "above two"? If one of the
stock choices in xf86config for hsync and vsync rates matches your monitor,
choose it; otherwise, choose the "enter your own settings" line and enter them.

Assuming you use startx to run X, do it this way:

        startx >/tmp/xerrors 2>&1

Use any filename you prefer, of course.
