char-major-108 is ppp

If ppp works as it should then i see no need to worry, there are other
alias'es which do the same, for example net-pf-1 is another.

The question is how is ppp defined as a module of compiled into the
kernel.??

If its in the kernel then you could try the following in /etc/modules.conf
or conf.modules, the latest version 2.3.6 uses modules.conf

alias char-major-108 off

If its a module then save the old /etc/conf.modules file and do;

modprobe -c > /etc/conf.modules
Now it might also be a good idea to do;
cp conf.modules modules.conf in the /etc dir.
