What you possably need is newer librarys as well, i have never installed or
upgraded in this manner, i have no idea if the gcc package you installed
had any libs in it at all.
Normaly one would follow instructions from the 2.2.14 Documentation/Changes
file, it gives the mininum requirmets to compile that kernel version, check
ALL your programs and libs against that list, it even tells you HOWTO do
that.
