GCC 2.7.2.3 is no longer the _required_ compiler for kernels - Linus
still uses it ( I believe ), but Alan Cox ( the guy who actually writes
most of the kernel these days not just stamps it ) uses egcs 1.1.2 . RedHat 6.0
should ship with egcs 1.1.2 . what does gcc --version say?
Also what errors do you get when you try to compile the kernel? (exact
messages ).

You really don't need to compile your own gcc no matter what
(unless you really enjoy it), you can grab rpms for just about
any version of gcc -- look here:
