I finally feel comfortable enough with Linux. Thanks to everyone here.
That I convince my girlfriend to drop Windows for Linux. She's a pianist
and needs a dedicated (stable) machine mostly for IM and Business admin
tasks. Later I want to set her up with Digital Audio and Sequencing
capabilities.

I convinced her to try Linux and loaded Gnome (RH6.1) into her HP
Pavilion 4440. When I started the install I had to use the text install
method because all text was blocked out when I used the graphic install.
Instead of a word- the screen shows a black rectangle. Then the install
went fine (using text install) until I got to the monitor part at the
end. Says there is a problem with the video card. To make sure it was
the card I tried the monitor I use on my box. But I never got an "ok"
response and accidently invoked Gnome so I don't know where that problem
is at the moment.

Oh, one other problem was when I booted for the first time after the
first install. Half of the letters were missing. I only made it to
runlevel 3 so I don't know what Gnome looked like. But runlevel 3 was
missing mostly vowels. I was looking for a wheel to spin (and thinking
about Vanna).

Now I am looking at the screen and all the icons look fine. But still
getting the black blocks in place of the text. The install named the
video card as a SiS5988.

Anyone see anything like this before???

TIA

John
