NO its NOT true.

You can install what you want to with most distro's.
What your friend possably means is IF you install everything then you will
need at least 1Gb of disk space.
Some distro's even need 1.5Gb of disk space.
Slackware i belive can be as small as 3Mb, but you wont be able to do much
with just the 3Mb installed.
