You should be able to use the partition by first accessing the drive in
fdisk (e.g., "fdisk /dev/hda"), then using the option to change the
partition's partition type (option  t) from whatever it is to 0x83 (Linux
native). Save the new partition table, and then mke2fs should be able to
create a filesystem on the partition.

THis won't give you a swap partition, though. Since you don't say how much
memory the system has or what it will be used for, I don't know if you
really need one -- supplying one is customary, but with only 1.2 gB to work
with, you need to decice. IF you do use swap, you will need to delete that
partition and create 2 smaller ones -- one Linux native, one swap.
