I recetnly installed RH6.1 on a system w/ a similar
situation. I had Win98 already installed, and using
two partitions C: and D:

Well, from the DOS prompt, I started fdisk and deleted
the second partition (D:) which will be an 'extended-dos'
partition. This will disable this part of the disk from
Windows' use.

Then, during the RH install, I was put on DiskDruid. I had
use fdisk myself before, but it seems like w/ RH6.1 you don't
have much choice... so I went ahead and used it. I added a
new partition on the recognized free space of the disk about
64MB is size for LinuxSwap. Then, I added a final partition
to be mounted on '/', taking the rest of the available diskspace.
You might want to split it even further into '/' and '/home' if
you have the need.

DiskDruid will automatically recognize the DOS partition and leave
it untouched if you choose a 'custom' installation. I don't know
what will happen if you choose 'server' install, but I would not
try it if you want to keep your data safe.

Then, when you are almost done, installation will ask you if you
want LILO to boot the system, or if you want LILO on floppy. I
left it on the disk, and when it boots up, it gives me the option
of going into either Linux or Dos (windows).

All of my Windows data was left intact. However, just in case you
should backup any critical data.
