I'm trying to print from one Linux box to another. One is running Redhat
6.1, the other some old Slackware distro (for some reason the boss
believes Slackware is the way to go on servers ... whatever). But anyway.
I have successfully set up an HP LaserJet 5L printer on lpt0 on our
server, and have successfully printed both ASCII and PostScript to it.
I've added all the necessary machines to the printhost's /etc/hosts.lpd
file. I've even given them fully-qualified names in the file.

The printhost's /etc/printcap entry is thus:

lj5l:\
         :lp=/dev/lp0:\
         :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj5l:\
         :af=/var/log/printing:\
         :lf=/var/log/printing-errors:\
         :if=/var/spool/lpd/filters/ljet4-filter:\
         :pl#66:\
         :pw#80:\
         :pc#150:\
         :mx#0:\
         :sh:

My local workstation's printcap entry is:

lj5l:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj5l:\
        :rm=printhost:\
        :rp=lj5l:\
        :lp=:\
        :sh:

I have lpd up and running on both my workstation and printhost.

Here's what happens. When I get on my Linux workstation (RH 6.1) and try
to print something, nothing comes out of the printhost's printer. When I
do an lpc status on both my workstation and printhost, I get the
following:

lj5l:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present

Checking /var/spool/lpd/lj5l/status on my workstation reveals:

sending to commnet

(and the date stamp is that of the last print job I sent)

Checking /var/spool/lpd/lj5l/status on printhost:

lj5l is ready and printing

And yet nothing comes out of the printer. I can do lpr -Plj5l filename on
printhost, and the file prints just fine. But I can't get remote printing
to work.

Help!
