insmod plip/sb: Device or resource busy?

I cannot manage to use sb nor plip.
The PLIP-minihowto is outdated, Modules-Howto doesn't tell other that 
compiling issues and at USENET I don't find an answer.
when doing:
  insmod plip
  plip.o:Device or resouce busy
However using sndconfig, netconf works(or whatever the names of the 
utils are).
That is not a real solution, I want to hand tune my config files.
What should I read about that new beaviour of the kernel?
