At that point, you can't (except by the trivial "solution" of writing it
down on a piece of paper). But if you do the startx command a bit
differently, it will take care of this for you. Begin with ...

        startx >/tmp/xerrors 2>&1

... and when you exit, all the output from startx should be in the file
/tmp/xerrors . To be safe, go to another console immeddiately and sun the
"sync" command, to be sure the output is actually on disk ... in case the
failure is doing more than just killing the one console.
