Thanks Richard and Mike.
Perhaps I should have explained myself fully in my original message.
xf86config and setup are the text mode tools that I coundn't get
800*600 with more than 8 bit colour.
XF86Setup did the trick. Not as flash as the one that comes with
Caldera, but it worked OK. I can sort of remember using that
one with RH5.2 a while back, but I'd forgotten all about it.
I've installed several different distros a dozen or so times since I
sent the original message. During one of the caldera installs, I
did yesterday I saved XF86Config with several different
colour depths and using one of them works, but XF86Setup is
a better idea in the long run.

I still have a few zillion other things to sort out. I'll be back :)
