Hard to say from the little you have told us.

First the basics: What Linux distribution and version? What kernel version?
What NIC module?

It is possible that what is hanging is not the NIC itself but whatever
follows it in the boot/init sequence. (Or maybe not; some distributions are
ambiguous this way, while others are not.) So, if you know, what normally
happens after eth0 comes up?

Did you add a sound card or just configure one that was always in the
system? If the first, might you have introduced an IRQ or IObase conflict?

When eth0 neither fails nor succeeds, how long do you wait before giving up?
If you haven't waited as long as 5 minutes, do so, in case the problem is
only a long delay. What do you do after you give up? Have you tried to
CRTL-C your way past the block?

How do you assign your IP address to eth0? DHCP, perhaps? DHCP plus an IRQ
problem could cause a long delay at this step in a Red Hat-like boot/init
sequence.
