The best source for information about Modems under linux is the Modem
HOWTO. Also you may want to consider an upgrade from 5.2 to a newer
flavour of Linux.

Before trying to get a modem to work
1. find out if it is a winmodem
2. find out if it is a PCI modem
Winmodems do not work and PCI modems are usually winmodems.

3. find out if it is a PnP modem, these can be configured using isapnp
(part of PnP tools).

I can help if it is a PnP modem, so try

pnpdump > suitable_scratch file.

do man pnpdump first. The command should dump PnP related config info to
the file. If the modems id string shows up, the modem is probably PnP.

Anyway if the modem is PnP on a ISA bus and there are no unforseen
problems I can help you out.
