"... doesn't seem to be working" is not a very technical description of your
problem, so I can only give you general advice.
1. Is the modem a real modem or a Winmodem? Check by looking it up at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html . If it is a real modem, continue
on; if it is not, get one -- Linux can't use Winmodems (except for the
Lucent ones, as documented at the preceding URL.
2. Do you have your computer's BIOS set for non-PnP OS? I'm guessing not,
since you say *Windows* assigns the IRQ and IO to the modem. Change this
BIOS setting and see if it helps.
3. When you use setserial, don't try to set the UART type by hand. Just set
the IO and IRQ, then see if a setserial probe (e.g., "setserial /dev/ttyS2"
reports a UART type. This is a good, quick text of whether it is actually
finding anything on the device.
4. If none of this proves to be the answer, explain "The modem still doesn't
seem to be working" more clearly in your followup. What program are you
trying? Is the synlink /dev/modem pointing to /dev/ttyS2? And so on.
A couple of general comments:
RH 5.2 is pretty old, probably full of exploitable security holes.
The current version is 6.2, and it has a large number of updates itself.
for genreal information, look to the HowTos, FAQs, and such at the
Linux Documentation Project, http://www.linuxdoc.org/ .
