Virus, no, some running program that does not show under ps -aux i doubt
very much.
su. su is a program that can be invoked by a user, the way you word your
mail i get the impression you are suprised to see that you can use su, if
you do not require anyone to use it, change its permissions with something
like 'chmod a-x' or move it into roots home dir.
I could also be missing something here as i see you have posed a reply to
your own message, of which i have not received the origanal(s).
The 12% ping loss can have many reasons, check with 'ifconfig eth0' what
are the states, regarding.
RX packets errors dropped overruns
TX packets errors dropped overruns
collisions
Do other machines on the LAN have packet loss as well,??
