Yes there is no need to reinstall :
1. get bastille script for hardening linux from http://www.freshmeat.net
2. install ipchains i think you probably already have it. then get the
firewall from http://firewall.langistix.com it is really nice just edit it
to allow the services you need.
3. You can also get pmfirewall.
