We've had a lot of good luck in the past with Dell (I've been a Dell guy for 12
years), but this has happened a few times with recent orders.

Other recent things I've noticed about Dell:

1) website has had a lot more issues in the past six months (premier/my
account/regular). (ex: something as simple as missing common RAID configs in
the order process which forces me to call the rep to get an order through with
the hardware I need).
2) account reps rotating more frequently
3) Shipping/packing times have become increasingly inaccurate in general, even
on orders that come in within reasonable times. I've received packages before
tracking numbers appeared on my order, and I've had to wait for "in stock"
orders for 7 days.

I'm worried if, as William mentioned, it's becoming systematic within Dell to
ignore these problems as they are cutting costs.

I thought about the holidays being an issue, but is the demand for servers that
much higher in the holidays? Maybe budgets dictate buying towards the end of
the year, but I haven't seen too much of that.

What really nags at me is the way the delay for this order, as well as our past
few orders, has been handled. I don't blame the account rep as I really believe
she is reading the info off her screen. What I don't like is being strung along
with these 1-2 week delays, and the pattern of being told the day before server
is supposed to arrive that the order is being delayed again. I scheduled three
contractors to do an install weeks ago, and had to cancel on them ONE day
before the job. I actually called my rep to confirm everything is good, and up
until the last day, everything looked good for my ship date (overnight). My
curiosity is peaked as to how Dells tracking systems aren't aware that parts
aren't going to be at the factory in time for the ship date at least a week
before hand.

Phew... pardon the rant. I guess I just want to know how other loyal Dell IT
managers feel about Dell and if I'm getting paranoid.

Thanks,

Eugene

Subject: Re: Dell PowerEdge server shipping delays

Eugene,

We have ordered several R710 servers in the last few months - accessories/etc
were received within 2-3 business days, the servers themselves within 3 weeks
(within the time frame promised in the order).

Historically, we've never had any real worries about Dell delivering within
their time frames (having placed many orders every year for the last 7 years).
I think there was only one case where we had to escalate, and this got tracked
down to the shipping companies fault (Dell sent out a new system for us
immediately).

The current delay of 3 weeks is a little higher than the 2 weeks I would
normally expect or even the 1 week I've seen on occasion - but not enough to
keep us from placing future orders.

It's possible that only certain classes of accounts or models are being
impacted. Ultimately, you have to be able to trust your dell account rep -- if
you feel he's not giving you the right information, you should ask to be
switched to a different one. Sometimes you have to push to be given a real
answer; I've definitely had to do that on a few occasions - but you should
never have to put up with being strung along.

Matt
