Just go into the DRAC setup at boot and set it to 'detached'.

the disk was indeed sdb3 not sda3

Giving up waiting for root device
Alert /dev/sdb3 (not sda3) does not exist
Dropping to a shell

Therefore i still have the same error though.

I have virtual media installed. can you please tell me how to remove the 
virtual disks please.

For some reason virtual media becomes /dev/sda

There is a Debian bug suggesting that some kernel versions cause issues with

this hardware configuration.
