Good Morning, it is easy to configure and use the IT Assistant. All you need is to install the Dell Open Manage Server Administrator on your server boxes. If you want to manage clients, you need ny using IT A version 8.5 that the clients are in a domain and Open Manage Client Instrumentations be installed. You can find it on the download page in the client sections.
After that you configure your snmp service on the windows machines with the community name you like and the trap destination. The same on your linux boxes by editing /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf (also in ESX) rocommunity and trap destination at least. After that you create you range in ITA and discover and inventory your machines. That's it for getting the system state overview, incl. installed HW, service tags, health state....... That's extremely interesting. I've had a few emails off-list pointing out that IT Assistant does run on XP (and Vista -- though not 64-bit which we use) and I've managed to get it installed. I'm currently struggling to get it to actually communicate with our servers, but I think that's down to not having had snmp installed before I installed OMSA or something. I've not really dealt with snmp before now so that needs to be learned about too (yes, I have some big gaps in my knowledge). So I'm a bit lost at the moment, reading as many docs as I can etc but not really getting anywhere so far. I'm starting to think getting Nagios up and running (or using various simple scripts) would be easier than getting IT Assistant up and running as this rate. At least with Linux things you can see what you are doing, log files are where you expect them to be and so on, while Windows kind of hides an awful lot behind the scenes. Anyway, thanks again.
